Jean Klan, Photographer of Powell River
I was born and raised in the beautiful East Kootenay city of Kimberley, B.C.
When I was a child, there were three things I’d like to boast about Kimberley: - It had the largest lead and zinc mine.
- It was the highest city in Canada.
- Our ski hill had one of the longest T-Bar runs.
I left Kimberley after graduating from High School and since then, there have been many changes, including the closure of Comino’s Sullivan Mine, which had a tremendous impact on the community.
My Dad was an avid photographer and it wasn’t uncommon for us to pile into the car and go for a Sunday afternoon drive. Dad would often bring along his camera, just in case. So from an early age I developed an appreciation for pictures and home movies. I remember many Friday nights (before we got our first T.V.), when friends would come over and Dad would show his latest slides.
Since leaving Kimberley, I have lived in many B.C. communities including Victoria, Cranbrook, Burnaby, Elkford, Aldergrove, Abbotsford, Powell River and Gibsons, where I now live. Photography has become a regular part of my life, and just like my Dad, I seldom go out without my camera. In the last year, I’ve rekindled my love for painting, so now I’m on the lookout for great shots to paint.
